Background and History
The BCPA was launched on September 25, 2008. Its predecessor was the British Columbia Federation of Police Officers.
The mission of the BCPA is to act as the combined voice of front-line policing in British Columbia. While member police associations/unions of the BCPA remain responsible for negotiating their own contracts with their respective employers, the BCPA will offer guidance, research and communications support on both contract and other issues relevant and important to police officers in British Columbia.
The mission statement and motto of the BCPA is "To Protect Those Who Protect Others".
Tom Stamatakis, President of the Vancouver Police Union (VPU), is the first President of the BCPA. He was appointed to the position by both the Board of the VPU and by the Board of the B.C. Federation of Police Officers to lead and manage the transition to the new BCPA. Mr. Stamatakis remains President of the VPU as well.
